چکیده

To test for equality of variances given two independent random samples from univariate normal populations, popular choices would be the two-sample F test and Levene’s test. The latter is a nonparametric test while the former is parametric: it is the likelihood ratio test, and also a Wald test. Another Wald test of interest is based on the difference in the sample variances. We give a nonparametric analogue of this test and call it the R test. The R, F and Levene tests are compared in an indicative empirical study. For moderate sample sizes when assuming normality the R test is nearly as powerful as the F test and nearly as robust as Levene’s test. It is also an appropriate test for testing equality of variances without the assumption of normality, and so it can be strongly recommended.

Comparing the overlapping of two independent confidence intervals with a single confidence interval for two normal population parameters

Two overlapping confidence intervals have been used in the past to conduct statistical inferences about two population means and proportions. Several authors have examined the shortcomings of Overlap procedure and have determined that such a method distorts the significance level of testing the null hypothesis of two population means and reduces the statistical power of the test. Nearly all res...

A Note on Leveneis Tests for Equality of Variances

t • • ABSTRACT Consider testing for equality of variances in a one-way analysis of variance. Levene's test is the usual F-test for equality of means computed on pseudo-observations, which one defines as the absolute deviations of the data points from an estimate of the group "center". We show that, asymptotically, Levene1s test has the correct level whenever the estimate of group "center" is an...

Testing equality of means and variances of several Weibull populations

The usual practice for testing homogeneity of several populations in terms of means and variances is first to test for the equality of variances and once this assumption is found to be tenable then to test the equality of means. Singh (1986) proposes a very interesting procedure based on two likelihood ratio statistics for testing homogeneity of several normal (μ, σ) populations. Singh uses a m...

Comparing the Statistical Tests for Homogeneity of Variances

Comparing the Statistical Tests for Homogeneity of Variances by Zhiqiang Mu Testing the homogeneity of variances is an important problem in many applications since statistical methods of frequent use, such as ANOVA, assume equal variances for two or more groups of data. However, testing the equality of variances is a difficult problem due to the fact that many of the tests are not robust agains...

Gene expression To permute or not to permute

Permutation test is a popular technique for testing a hypothesis of no effect, when the distribution of the test statistic is unknown. To test the equality of two means, a permutation test might use a test statistic which is the difference of the two sample means in the univariate case. In the multivariate case, it might use a test statistic which is the maximum of the univariate test statistic...
